Profile
Julie Tinker graduated from Stanford University in 2001 with a BA in Communication and an MA in Sociology. Later, after spending years as a professional track and field athlete, she hung up her spikes to pursue graphic design, a longtime passion. This spring, she graduated as valedictorian at the School of Visual Arts with her MFA in Design. In her work, she explores the relationship between graphic design and other forms of expression, from music to film to social activism.
Communication objective
To create a souvenir store for a historical event, including 10 different souvenirs and a unique environment in which they could be sold.
My historical event: the sexual revolution.
I fashioned my souvenir stand as a revolutionized 1950's kitchen, including wallpaper that contains images of Gloria Steinem and book covers from the feminist movement, like Our Bodies Our Selves and The Feminine Mystique. I created laminated graphics for the floor and packaging for the souvenirs using the female symbol in pattern and repetition, helping to create a truly liberated kitchen.
Tools used
I use Adobe tools for all steps of the process. I used Adobe® Illustrator® in the early steps of the project to create a scale model of the exhibition space before construction. Then I created wall graphics, packaging, and magnetic graphics with Illustrator®. I used Adobe Photoshop® to create the checkered floor graphic and I used Acrobat® to create PDF documents to share and present designs. |
