Car Color Timeline

Profile
Aaron Kapor was born in a small town in northern California about five miles south of Modesto. Growing up in an area surrounded by dairies and orchards, Aaron had little knowledge of or interest in design but preferred experimenting with computer science. Aaron transferred in 2004 to Art Center after a few years of studying communication at Stanislaus State University, where he had two radio programs broadcast from the school's campus. He continues studying communication and media design at Art Center. He is set to graduate later this year.

Communication objective
The objective behind this piece was to come up with a method to organize information as simple as the color of cars in the most effective and interesting way. Using a timeline system, I visually organized the structure of Art Center’s Hillside parking lot in step-by-step panels. The timeline starts with raw data taken from photos and information gathered from each individual car. The data is then broken down into abstract shapes and optical mixing, giving the viewer various choices depending on their personal visual preference. At the end the data is compiled in a fairly generic information graphic.

Tools used
I used Adobe® Illustrator® to create the grid and the shapes and sizes of the abstract pieces; I also used it to design the car icons. I used Adobe Photoshop® for the layout in order to emulate car swatches using a grain filter for the metallic colors.
