Through 15 years of living in Asia, Shelly Au has personally known those whom have suffered from poverty, living in a nation which pursues wealth at lightning speed. Au's experience inspired him to document the fallout of China's rapid economic development, by photographing condemned neighborhoods and the people who are still dwelling in them. The images reflect a personal journey of pain and anger, as well as the pictures of hope and courage witnessed amidst every day life.
China's rapid growth is both powerful and stunning, yet fast-paced change has also ushered in the destruction of history and entire communities. For square miles, buildings are marked with the eight red brush stroke character, (pronounced Chai), denoting intentions to destroy or take down. Two Beautiful Daughters (a quote from St. Augustine), is a meditation on the pain and anger that accompanies powerlessness, and the courage and hope required, to persevere through loss.
