Info

Objective
Bay Area Exports was a collaborative project that began shooting in November 2001. The goal of the project was to create a professional and marketable product related to scratch DJs and bay area turntabalism. Bay Area Exports was created to serve as a showcase and a glossary of DJ scratching techniques. Some of the best bay area talents (The Tomkat, DJ Disk, DJ Hop, Zeph & Saucer) were invited to film and immortalize their moves on DVD. We were involved with the project from its conception (the idea put forth by The Tomkat). We planned the structure, directed the editing of the footage and created the motion graphics tracks. Our responsibilities also included the final authoring of the DVD, the design of the cover, the disc and the booklet inserts. Due to the nature of the DVD format and it’s scope we submit the project in its entirety along with a 5 minute trailer created especially for the Adobe Design Achievement Awards.

Tools used
Adobe products were an integral part of every step in our project. Illustrator was used to create layouts and storyboards for pre-production, helping us better organized the flow of interactivity we needed to have on the DVD. Illustrator® was also employed to create the cover art, booklet and disc designs. Photoshop® was the key tool for creating all still menus, titles and highlights for the project. The application was also pivotal in creating all artwork exported to AfterEffects for use in motion menus, motion graphics tracks and behind the scenes footage. Adobe® Premiere® was our one stop shop for digital video manipulation. All footage was sorted, transferred and edited using Premiere. The ability to edit multiple video tracks at once lent itself especially well to editing for the DVD video format, (since our project contained multiple camera angles streaming at once). Motion graphics tracks, the motion menus, the menu build effects and the split screen effects on the DVD could not have been done without After Effects®. All these diverse elements were then authored together in a DVD authoring program and forged into a fully functioning DVD project.
