Communication objective
Information can be grasped with optimal efficiency when it is visible and tangible, rather than floating numbers. This piece demonstrates the power of illustration in showcasing large amounts of information.
Twenty-nine photos of skirts were viewed from flickr.com and each photo was recorded with the length of the skirt and the wearer’s location. An aerial map shows all the locations, while the callouts examine the interiors. The simple color scheme streamlines the aesthetic and is instantly recognizable. This image is highly functional as the viewer can quickly gain an understanding of its content.
Tools used
Adobe® Illustrator® was the tool behind this piece. I created most details using the pen tool. First I created the ground in the aerial map, then the streets, buildings, and subway. Both the trees and the skirt-wearing figures are repeating symbols. I applied subtle gradation to the sides of the ground, trees, and land to enhance visibility and added a three-dimensional feel with drop shadows. I separated each component into corresponding layers for better organization. Using guides, I aligned the text and charts to comfortably co-exist with the map and create a clean, modern informational illustration. |
