Communication objective
"Shark Suit: the Musical" is about the strange barriers we build around ourselves, and how these walls can motivate narcissism and solipsism. It's also loaded with fun musical numbers. I wanted the animation styles to shift and change with the emotional beats of the characters, so I used a wide range of techniques — from painstakingly hand-drawn colored pencil, to extremely complex puppet animation highlighting old-school animation principles. I even shot live action footage of soap and milk diffusions for surreal overlays and textures. The result is a strange and wonderfully entertaining film.
Tools used
I created all the models and 3D sets from hand-drawn designs and scanned textures in Adobe® Illustrator® and Photoshop®. The real workhorse was Adobe After Effects®, where I assembled the numerous sets in 3D with camera moves. I also rigged the characters in Adobe After Effects® with expression controls for streamlined ease of use. I later set up the shots according to my hand-drawn animatic. I also used the After Effects motion tracker to register hundreds of hand-drawn animation and composite live-action liquid effects. The result was rendered in HD. |
